Specimen Collection Details
Collection:
Sputum collected just after awakening in a sputum collection container; respiratory specimen other than sputum, body fluid, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), exudates, tissue, or first morning urine in a sterile plastic container; ear, eye, or other swab specimen in Routine Culture transport swab; bone marrow in a red top tube or sterile container.
Stability:
Body fluids, lower respiratory specimen, ear, and urine stable 2 hours ambient or 24 hours refrigerated. All other specimens stable 24 hours ambient. All specimen types unstable frozen.
Standard Volume:
5 mL sputum and other lower respiratory specimens; 50 mL body fluid; 5 mL CSF; 50 mL urine; 1 mL bone marrow.
Minimum Volume:
1 mL sputum and other lower respiratory specimens; 10 mL body fluid; 2 mL CSF; 1 mL urine; 0.5 mL bone marrow.
Transport:
Body fluids, lower respiratory specimens, ear, and urine specimens ambient or refrigerated. All other specimens ambient.
Delayed transport; unsterile container; frozen specimen; swab not in transport media. Unless specimen is considered difficult to recollect, leaking containers will be rejected if the source is respiratory, or if there is any indication of mycobacterial infection such as clinical history or orders for Acid-Fast bacillus (AFB) culture and/or smear.
No yeast or filamentous fungi isolated at 3 weeks.
