Specimen Collection Details
Collection: NOTE: THIS TEST IS FOR PREGNANT WOMEN. Collection performed Monday-Saturday by appointment with PeaceHealth Laboratories Outpatient Phlebotomy. Patient must be fasting for 8-16 hours prior to collection.
Four specimens required. Collect one 7.5 mL serum separator tube (SST) each draw. Also acceptable: One 4.5 light green top plasma separator tube (PST), one 2 mL grey top tube, or one 5 mL gold top serum separator tube (SST) for each draw. Four specimens total: Fasting, 1 hour, 2 hour, and 3 hour. Procedure: A glucola dosage of 100 grams is administered after fasting specimen is drawn. The 1 hour, 2 hour, and 3 hour specimens are drawn subsequent to the ingestion of the glucola dose.
Handling: Centrifuge and separate serum or plasma from cells within 2 hours. Specimens drawn in serum or plasma separator tubes can be transported in the original tube after centrifugation. Clearly indicate the draw time and fasting or minutes post-glucola dose, and the order of each draw, e.g., “1 of 4,” etc., on each specimen. Refrigerate.
Stability: 8 hours ambient, 6 days refrigerated, or 3 months frozen.
Standard Volume: 2 mL serum or plasma.
Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL serum or plasma.
Transport: Refrigerated.
Rejection Criteria: Moderate hemolysis.

Fasting <95 mg/dL
1 hour <180 mg/dL
2 hours <155 mg/dL
3 hours <140 mg/dL

Interpretive Guidelines:

The Diagnosis of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus requires that any two of the four plasma glucose values obtained during the 3 hour glucose tolerance exceed the reference range.
