Specimen Collection Details
Collection: THIS TEST IS FOR PREGNANT WOMEN. This screening test should be performed between 24 and 28 weeks gestation. Patient need not be fasting. PROCEDURE: 50 grams of glucola is administered orally. One hour after ingestion of the glucola dose, collect one 7.5 mL serum separator tube (SST), one 4 mL green top heparinized plasma separator tube (PST), or one 2 mL grey top tube (potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride).
Handling: Centrifuge and separate serum or plasma from cells immediately. Specimen drawn in serum or plasma separator tube can be transported in the original tube after centrifugation. Refrigerate for transport.
Stability: 8 hours ambient, 6 days refrigerated, or indefinitely if frozen.
Standard Volume: 2 mL plasma.
Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL plasma.
Transport: Refrigerated.
Rejection Criteria: Moderate hemolysis.
MEDICARE MAY REQUIRE A SIGNED ADVANCE BENEFICIARY NOTICE (ABN) FOR THIS TEST

Reference Range: 1 hour: 70-139 mg/dL

Interpretive Guidelines:

A value of ≥140 mg/dL, 1 hour after the 50 gram load indicates the need for a full diagnostic, 100 gram OGTT [Glucose, Gestational DM Diagnosis Profile (31930)], performed in a fasting state.
