Specimen from any site using a routine culture transport swab. Collect fluid in a sterile container, or submit properly labeled and prepared slides.
Stability:
Swab and CSF stable 24 hours ambient. All other specimens stable 24 hours refrigerated. All specimen types unstable frozen. All specimens untstable frozen.
Standard Volume:
2 mL fluid.
Minimum Volume:
1 mL fluid.
Transport:
Swab and CSF ambient. All other specimens refrigerated.
Rejection Criteria:
Unsterile container; delayed transport; frozen specimen; swab not in transport media. Unless specimen is considered difficult to recollect, leaking containers will be rejected if source is respiratory, or if there is an indication of mycobacterial infection such as clinical history or orders for Acid Fast Bacillus (AFB) culture and/or smear.
