Specimen Collection Details
Collection: One lavender top (EDTA) tube (any size), or 3 capillary tubes filled with blood and sealed with clay.
Handling: Place capillary tubes inside a sealed vacutainer tube and refrigerate.
Stability: 24 hours refrigerated.
Standard Volume: 1 mL EDTA whole blood, or 3 capillary tubes.
Minimum Volume: 0.3 mL EDTA whole blood in a 1 mL microcollection tube, or 2 capillary tubes.
Transport: Refrigerated.
Comments: If sufficient blood is submitted, an automated hematocrit will be performed. If capillary tubes are submitted, a packed cell volume (PCV) will be determined from centrifuged capillary tubes.
Rejection Criteria: Frozen specimen; clotting; marked hemolysis; broken capillary tubes.
