Specimen Collection Details
Collection:
One 7.5 mL serum separator tube (SST). Also acceptable: ACD, EDTA, heparinized and citrated plasma.
Handling:
Allow to clot, centrifuge, separate serum or plasma from cells and pour into a plastic vial.
Stability:
5 days ambient, 14 days refrigerated, or 2 months frozen.
Standard Volume:
1 mL serum or plasma.
Minimum Volume:
0.5 mL serum or plasma.
Transport:
Refrigerated.
Comments:
Confirmatory testing by RIBA is only recommended when the EIA screen is ‘weakly positive’ (i.e., S/CO <3.0). RIBA results are reported as positive or negative in this assay. Patients with positive HCV antibodies by EIA should be evaluated with a sensitive qualitative nucleic acid test for HCV RNA (Hepatitis C Virus RNA DetectR) to rule out active infection.
