Collection: | For specimens other than blood use Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) by Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) (58490). Collect one 5 mL red top tube. Also acceptable: One 7.5 mL serum separator tube (SST) or one 4 mL lavender top tube (EDTA). | ||||||||
Handling: | Centrifuge and separate serum or plasma from cells and pour onto a plastic vial. Freeze specimen within 30 minutes of collection. Label ‘serum’ or ‘plasma’. | ||||||||
Stability: | 8 hours ambient, 72 hours refrigerated, or 3 months frozen. | ||||||||
Standard Volume: | 1 mL serum or plasma. | ||||||||
Minimum Volume: | 0.5 mL serum or plasma. | ||||||||
Transport: | Frozen on dry ice. | ||||||||
Comments: | DNA deteriorates rapidly after 24 hours if not frozen. | ||||||||
