Specimen Collection Details
Collection:
Two 4 mL lavender top tubes (EDTA). Also acceptable: One 8.5 mL yellow top tube (ACD solution A).
Handling:
Centrifuge and separate plasma from cells into 2 plastic vials. Freeze within 4 hours of collection.
Stability:
Specimen stable 2 months frozen. Unstable ambient or refrigerated.
Standard Volume:
2 mL plasma in each of 2 plastic vials (4 mL total).
Minimum Volume:
1 mL plasma in each of 2 plastic vials (2 mL total).
Transport:
Frozen on dry ice. Send specimen according to Infectious Substance Shipping Guidelines.
Comments:
Identifies drug-resistant strains before initiating HIV antiretroviral therapy and detects sentinel mutations prior to virologic failure. Determines whether drug failure is due to resistance, compliance, drug metabolism, etc. Assesses what changes in antiretroviral therapy are likely to be effective.
Rejection Criteria:
Specimen not separated from cells within 4 hours of collection; specimen received ambient, refrigerated, or thawing.
