Specimen Collection Details
Collection: One 7.5 mL serum separator tube (SST).
Handling: Allow to clot, centrifuge and separate serum from cells and pour into a plastic vial. Freeze.
Stability: 8 hours ambient, 48 hours refrigerated, or 1 month frozen.
Standard Volume: 1 mL serum.
Minimum Volume: 150 µL serum.
Transport: Frozen on dry ice.
Comments: High serum concentrations of vitamin B12 (cobalamin) cause false positive. For patients undergoing B12 therapy, wait 48 hours to one week after injection before collection of specimen.
