Methodology: See individual components
Edit Date: 6/11/2010
Components: Creatinine / CBC (NO DIFF) / Lead / Urea Nitrogen (BUN) / Urinalysis with Microscopic Exam / Zinc Protoporphyrin (ZPP)
Performed: Monday-Friday
Released: Same day as tested
CPT Code: 81001 / 82565 / 83655 / 84202 / 84520 / 85027
Specimen Collection Details
Collection: FOUR specimens total: One whole blood (EDTA) in a 6 mL royal blue top (EDTA) [also acceptable: one 4 mL tan top tube (lead free)], one 4 mL lavender top tube (EDTA), one 7.5 mL serum separator tube (SST), AND one 10 mL random urine in a clean, dry plastic container.
Handling: Wrap lavender top tube in foil to protect from light. Allow SST to clot and centrifuge within one hour of collection and transport in original tube. Transport all specimens within 24 hours of collection.
Stability: Limited by the urinalysis, which should be tested within 24 hours of collection, or 72 hours in a urine preservative tube (available upon request).
Standard Volume: 2 mL EDTA (royal blue) whole blood, 4 mL EDTA (lavender) whole blood, 2 mL serum (SST), and 10 mL urine.
Minimum Volume: 0.4 mL EDTA (royal blue) whole blood, 1.5 mL EDTA (lavender) whole blood, 1 mL serum (SST), and 1 mL urine.
Transport: Refrigerated.
Comments: WBC and platelet count may decline after 24 hours; 48 hours maximum delay. See also: Lead Exposure Follow Up (10610). Lavender top tubes (EDTA) may not be lead free. Elevated results will require a redraw using a royal blue top tube (EDTA) (lead free).
Rejection Criteria: Specimen in lavender EDTA tube received in laboratory more than 48 hours after collection; royal blue top tube and serum more than 6 days after collection; urine more than 24 hours after collection (72 hours in a urine preservative tube).
