Specimen Collection Details
Collection: 3-5 mL blood in a BacT/Alert MB bottle or in a sterile 10 mL green top tube (sodium heparin) using sterile technique. Collection of three specimens on consecutive days is recommended. Do not refrigerate.
Stability: 24 hours ambient. Unstable frozen.
Standard Volume: 3-5 mL blood.
Minimum Volume: 3 mL blood.
Transport: Ambient.
Comments: Acid fast bacilli which are isolated will be identified by DNA probe. Probe negative isolates will be sent to a reference laboratory for identification. Susceptibility testing will be done if appropriate. Additional charges will be added for these tests. Susceptibilities will be done on all isolates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. An additional charge may be added for this test.
Rejection Criteria: Anticoagulant other than heparin, Sodium Polyanetholesulfonate (SPS), or citrate; frozen specimen; leaking container.

No Acid Fast Bacilli isolated at 6 weeks.
