Specimen Collection Details | |||||||||
Collection: | Two 4 mL lavender top tubes (EDTA). If possible, collect Monday-Thursday. Also acceptable: Heparinized blood may be tested as an alternative specimen, but must be received in the laboratory within 2 hours of collection. | ||||||||
Handling: | Prepare two blood films and submit with the blood. Send to PeaceHealth Laboratories within 4 days of collection. | ||||||||
Stability: | 4 days refrigerated. | ||||||||
Standard Volume: | 4 mL EDTA whole blood. | ||||||||
Minimum Volume: | 2 mL EDTA whole blood. | ||||||||
Transport: | Refrigerated. | ||||||||
Comments: | For the confirmation of peripheral blood spherocytosis. Testing is not recommended in children less than 1 year old, as reference ranges and clinical interpretation have not been well studied for this age group. Testing of parents may be performed, but is only helpful if positive. A negative test in both parents does not completely exclude hereditary spherocytosis in their children. | ||||||||
