Standard Volume: 4 mL EDTA whole blood.
Minimum Volume: 2 mL EDTA whole blood.

Comments: For the confirmation of peripheral blood spherocytosis. Testing is not recommended in children less than 1 year old, as reference ranges and clinical interpretation have not been well studied for this age group. Testing of parents may be performed, but is only helpful if positive. A negative test in both parents does not completely exclude hereditary spherocytosis in their children.
Rejection Criteria: Clotting; marked hemolysis; frozen specimen.

Pathologist interpretation accompanies report.
