Specimen Collection Details
Collection: One 7.5 mL serum separator tube (SST). Also acceptable: One 7 mL green top tube (lithium heparin) or one 4.5 mL plasma separator tube (PST).
Handling: Allow to clot, centrifuge SST or PST within 2 hours of collection and transport in original tube. Centrifuge green top (heparin) tube within 2 hours of collection and separate plasma from cells into a plastic vial for transport. Refrigerate.
Standard Volume: 2 mL serum or plasma.
Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL serum or plasma.
Transport: Refrigerated.
Comments: Hemolyzed specimens produce falsely elevated phosphorus values.
Rejection Criteria: Use of tubes other than those specified.
