Specimen Collection Details
Collection:
24-hour stool sample in a pre-weighed screw-cap plastic container, obtained from Client Services. If 100 grams is not obtained in 24 hours, extend collection to 48-72 hours. Freeze. Patient should refrain from red meat for 3 days prior to collection and abstain from alcohol for 24 hours prior to and during collection. Compliance should be indicated. Include with the specimen a list of medications the patient is currently taking.
Handling:
Note time collection started and stopped on request form.
Stability:
14 days refrigerated, or indefinitely frozen. Unstable ambient.
Standard Volume:
At least 100 grams.
Transport:
Frozen on dry ice.
Reference ranges are reported as porphyrins excreted in ug/24 hours.
