Specimen Collection Details
Collection: One 7.5 mL serum separator tube (SST). Also acceptable: One 5 ml red top tube. Specimen should be collected before such prostatic manipulations as DRE, prostatic massage, TRUS, or prostatic biopsy.
Handling: Allow to clot, centrifuge and separate serum from cells within 3 hours. Refrigerate at 2-8o C. Freeze at -20o C if not assayed within 48 hours. Allow no more than two freeze/thaw cycles.
To assure accurate matching for historical graph, patient’s Social Security Number is requested in addition to date of birth.
Stability: 48 hours refrigerated or 5 months frozen at -20o C.
Standard Volume: 1 mL serum.
Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL serum.
Transport: Refrigerated, or frozen on dry ice.
Comments: This is a Hybritech 3rd Generation (Ultrasensitive) equimolar Total PSA with a clinical sensitivity of 0.008 ng/mL.
Rejection Criteria: Plasma; specimen frozen and thawed more than twice; refrigerated specimen received in laboratory more than 48 hours after collection.
