Collection: Performed by appointment only. Call the Hematology Dept. at 687.2134 x4615 to schedule. The procedure is scheduled between the hours of 8 AM – 2 PM. Patient is to collect total semen sample by masturbation into a sterile plastic container and bring immediately, in a brown paper bag, to PeaceHealth Laboratories, 123 International Way, Springfield. A Hematology technologist will take the sample from the patient and return it to the patient after processing, usually within 1 hour. The patient then delivers the specimen to the physician’s office for intrauterine insemination. Please provide patient with “Patient Instructions for Sperm Wash for Intrauterine Insemination”, Brochure 114953, available from Client Services.
Handling: Keep warm (body temperature).
Standard Volume: Total semen specimen.
Minimum Volume: Total semen specimen.
Transport: At all times avoid exposure of specimen to cold temperatures. If ambient temperature is cold, patient should transport specimen under coat or sweater near the body to maintain optimal sperm viability.
Comments: Sperm washings are scheduled one patient at a time in order to eliminate the possibility of specimen mix-ups. Semen is processed to reduce protein and concentrate sperm, as appropriate, prior to intrauterine insemination. Specimen is processed and results returned to patient in one hour in most cases. A report listing date of service is issued to the physician.
Rejection Criteria: No sperm present; no motile sperm present.
