40580:TESTOSTERONE, TOTAL & FREE
Methodology: | Chemiluminescent Immunoassay (CLIA) The concentration of free testosterone is derived from a mathematical expression based on constants for the binding of testosterone to sex hormone binding globulin.
Edit Date: | 8/2/2008 | ||||||||
Performed: | Monday-Friday
Released: | Same day | ||||||||
CPT Code: | 84270 / 84403 | ||||||||
Specimen Collection Details
Collection: | One 7.5 mL serum separator tube (SST). Also acceptable: One 5 mL red top tube. Collect at least 4 mL. Draw specimen between 0600 and 1000 if possible, as testosterone levels vary throughout the day.
Handling: | Allow to clot, centrifuge and separate serum from cells within 2 hours. Refrigerate. Freeze if specimen cannot be assayed within 7 days. Allow no more than one freeze/thaw cycle.
Stability: | 7 days refrigerated at 2-8° C, or 2 months frozen at -20° C.
Standard Volume: | 2 mL serum.
Minimum Volume: | 1 mL serum.
Transport: | Refrigerated, or frozen on dry ice.
Comments: | Grossly lipemic specimens may yield falsely elevated values. For testing on patients less than 1 year of age, see Testosterone, Total & Free, Women and Children (87135). |
||||||||
Rejection Criteria: | Gross hemolysis; gross lipemia, unless cleared by ultracentrifugation; more than one freeze/thaw cycle. |
