Specimen Collection Details
Collection: One 5 mL red top tube. D0 NOT use serum separator tube (SST). Note: Urine is the preferred specimen for toxicology testing. See Toxicology Screen, Urine (36700).
Handling: Allow to clot, centrifuge and separate serum from cells and pour into a plastic vial. Label transport tube ‘SERUM.’ List suspected drugs and known medication the patient is taking.
Standard Volume: 2 mL serum (hemolysis is acceptable).
Minimum Volume: 1.5 mL serum (hemolysis is acceptable).
Transport: Ambient or refrigerated.
Comments: This test screens for over 200 medications and drugs of abuse, including many antidepressants (TCA, SSRI), antiseizure, antihypertensives, antiarrhythmics, pain medications, benzodiazepines, NSAID, anticoagulants/antiplatelets, stimulants, antipsychotics, and oral hypoglycemics.
Rejection Criteria: Unlabeled or mislabeled tube; use of SST.
