Specimen Collection Details
Collection: One 7.5 mL serum separator tube (SST). Also acceptable: One 5 mL red top tube.
Handling: Allow to clot, centrifuge and separate serum within 2 hours. Refrigerate.
Stability: 8 days refrigerated at 2-8° C, or 1 year frozen if frozen within 24 hours of collection. Do not allow to thaw.
Standard Volume: 1 mL serum.
Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL serum.
Transport: Refrigerated, or frozen on dry ice.
Comments: Meassurement of transferrin levels in serum aids in the diagnosis of malnutrition, acute inflammation, infection, and red blood cell disorders such as iron deficiency anemia. See also Total Iron Binding Capacity (44210).
Rejection Criteria: Plasma; gross hemolysis or gross lipemia.
