Specimen Collection Details
Collection:
Aspirate, tissue, biopsy sample, or any other specimen that can be collected without contamination with normal flora. Collect aspirates using a syringe with air expelled or anaerobic transport system. The use of transport swabs is strongly discouraged. Send biopsies and other tissues in sterile container. To prevent drying of the specimen, add a few drops of sterile saline to small samples and submit in a sterile container.
Handling:
If syringe is submitted, the needle MUST be removed and the syringe capped. Do not refrigerate.
Stability:
Specimen in anaerobic transport media or syringe with air expelled stable 24 hours ambient. Specimen not in anaerobic transport media stable 2 hours or less ambient, depending on specimen volume. Unstable frozen.
Delayed transport; unsterile container; EDTA; syringe submitted with needle attached; swab not in transport media; frozen specimen. Unless specimenis considered difficult to recollect, leaking containers will be rejected if the source is respiratory, or if there is any indication of mycobacterial infection such as clinical history or orders for acid fast bacillus (AFB) culture and/or smear.
