Specimen Collection Details
Collection: Purulent material or aspirate using a sterile syringe with air expelled, an anaerobic transport system, or Routine Culture transport swab. Send biopsies and other tissues in a sterile container. To prevent drying of the specimen, add a few drops of sterile saline to small samples and submit in a sterile container. Do not refrigerate or freeze.
Handling: If syringe is submitted, the needle must be removed and the syringe capped.
Stability: 24 hours ambient. Unstable frozen.
Transport: Ambient.
Comments: Anaerobic culture can be performed on properly collected specimen; order Wound, Aerobic and Anaerobic Culture & Gram Stain (61652). If fluid, order Body Fluid, Aerobic Culture and Gram Stain (60683). Potential pathogens will be identified including select anaerobic organisms. Susceptibility testing will be done if appropriate. Additional charges will be added for these tests.
Rejection Criteria: Delayed transport; unsterile container; frozen specimen; lavender top tube (EDTA); swab not in transport media. Unless specimen is considered difficult to recollect, leaking containers will be rejected if source is respiratory or if there is an indication of mycobacterial infection such as clinical history or orders for Acid Fast Bacillus (AFB) culture and/or smear.
