One 7.5 mL serum separator tube (SST). Also acceptable: 4 mL green top tube (lithium heparin), or 4.5 mL plasma separator tube (PST). The patient should avoid any exercise of the arm or hand before or during collection which can cause an increase in potassium levels. Do not draw from an arm receiving an intravenous infusion.
Handling:
Allow to clot, centrifuge SST or PST within one hour of collection. Transport in original tube. Immediately centrifuge green top tube and separate plasma into a plastic vial for transport. Refrigerate.
