Specimen Collection Details
Collection: Stool in enteric transport (C&S) medium. Acceptable for infant: Rectal specimen on Routine Culture transport swab. Brochure provided with C & S medium contains instructions for collection. No more than one specimen should be collected in a 24-hour period.
Stability: C & S medium stable 24 hours ambient or 48 hours refrigerated. Transport swab stable 24 hours ambient or refrigerated. All specimen types unstable frozen. NOTE: Stool not in C&S medium will be accepted only if ambient and within 2 hours of collection, and delivered STAT to PeaceHealth Laboratories’ Microbiology department.
Standard Volume: 5 gm solid stool or 5 mL liquid stool.
Minimum Volume: 2 gm solid stool or 2 mL liquid stool.
Transport: Ambient or refrigerated.
Comments: For diagnostic testing: Ideally 2-3 specimens should be collected on consecutive days. However, specimens collected after the third day of hospital stay are of limited value. Testing for Clostridium difficile should be considered as an alternative to culture in all patients over the age of 6 months with clinically significant diarrhea and a history of antibiotic exposure. A biochemical screen may be done when presumptive pathogens are isolated. If indicated, identification will follow. Additional charges will be added for this test.

This test detects the presence of Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter, and E. coli 0157:H7. Additional media for the isolation of Vibrio will be included if specific instructions are given to look for this organism.

Rejection Criteria: Delayed transport; rectal swab with no visible fecal material; specimen mixed with water or urine; swab not in transport media; frozen specimen; more than one specimen collected within a 24-hour period.
