Specimen Collection Details
Collection: One 4 mL lavender top tube (EDTA). If multiple tests are ordered, send a separate specimen for this test.
Handling: Refrigerate whole blood. If available, include reports of CBC and iron studies with specimen.
Stability: 7 days refrigerated. Undatable frozen.
Standard Volume: 4 mL whole blood.
Minimum Volume: 1 mL whole blood.
Transport: Refrigerated.
Comments: Isolated Hgb F is not recommended for evaluating patients for hemoglobinopathy. Hemoglobinopathy Evaluation Panel (10570) is recommended for those patients. Isolated evaluation of Hgb F is usually limited to patients with juvenile CML and other related diseases.
Rejection Criteria: Frozen, clotted, or grossly hemolyzed specimens.
