Specimen Collection Details
Collection: 24-hour urine in acid-washed container with 10 mL 6 M hydrochloric acid (HCl) added at start of collection. Specimen must be refrigerated during collection. Also acceptable; Random specimen acidified with 6M HCl. Preservative can be added at end of collection only if specimen has been refrigerated entire time.
Handling: Adjust pH to less than or equal to 2.0 with 6M HCl. Aliquot into a clean, dry plastic container. Refrigerate or freeze.
Stability: Specimen stable 8 hours ambient, 7 days refrigerated, or indefinitely if frozen.
Standard Volume: 4 mL aliquot from a 24-hour urine collection or total random collection.
Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL aliquot from a 24-hour urine collection.
Transport: Refrigerated; or if frozen, on dry ice.
Rejection Criteria: Specimen containing drug that causes alkalemia or acidemia.
