Methodology: BacT/Alert Continuous Monitoring Bacterial System

Released: Preliminary at 24 hours or as soon as positive is detected. Final at 5-14 days.
CPT Code: 87040
Specimen Collection Details
Collection: Draw blood into BacT/Alert FA (aerobic) and/or FN (anaerobic), or PF (pediatric) bottles using aseptic technique as defined for blood culture collection. Bottle(s) are to be at ambient temperature. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Inspect broth and sensor and do not use if broth is cloudy or sensor is yellow. Recommended volumes to collect per draw:
NEONATES TO ONE YEAR: 0.5 to 1.5 mL in a BacT/Alert PF bottle (1.0 mL minimum preferred).
CHILDREN 1 TO 6 YEARS: 0.5 mL per year of age in a BacT/Alert PF bottle.
CHILDREN WEIGHING 30-80 POUNDS: 4-10 mL. If 4 mL or less is collected, use the BacT/Alert PF bottle. If between 4 and 10 mL is collected, use the BacT/Alert FA blood culture bottle. If 10 mL is collected, divide between the BacT/Alert FA and the BacT/Alert FN bottles.
CHILDREN WEIGHING MORE THAN 80 POUNDS AND ADULTS: 20 mL divided between the BacT/Alert FA and BacT/Alert FN bottles. Occasionally it will not be possible to collect 20 mL per draw from a patient in this group, in which case, inoculate the bottle(s) as described above for children weighing 30-80 pounds.
Stability: 24 hours ambient. Do not refrigerate. Unstable frozen.
Standard Volume: BacT/Alert FA and FN bottles: 10 mL blood each. BacT/Alert PF bottle: 4 mL blood.
Minimum Volume: BacT/Alert FA and FN bottles: 5 mL blood each. BacT/Alert PF bottles: 1 mL blood.
Transport: Ambient.
Comments: Isolated organisms will be identified and susceptibility testing will be done if appropriate. Additional charges will be added for these tests. Blood cultures are held for 2 weeks by special request when yeast is suspected. Please Note: Some organisms are inhibited by the anticoagulant (SPS) present in blood culture collection containers and may not be recovered, if present. They are: Streptobacillus moniliformis, Peptostreptococcus anaerobius, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Neisseria meningitidis. Contact Microbiology for collection instructions when these organisms are suspected. Rejection Criteria: Frozen specimen.
