Specimen Collection Details
Collection: Bone marrow aspirate in a sterile plastic container, red top vacutainer tube, or a 1.5 mL Isolator tube, available from Client Services. Collect bone marrow biopsy material in a sterile plastic container. Use sterile technique. Do not refrigerate.
Stability: Sterile plastic container or red top vacutainer tube stable 24 hours ambient. Isolator tube stable 16 hours ambient if volume is 1.5 mL, or 1 hour if volume is less than 1.5 mL. All specimen types unstable frozen.
Standard Volume: 2 mL bone marrow.
Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL bone marrow in sterile plastic container. 1.5 mL bone marrow in 1.5 mL Isolator tube.
Transport: Ambient.
Comments: Isolated organisms will be identified. Susceptibility testing will be done if appropriate. An additional charge will be added for these tests.
Rejection Criteria: Unsterile containers; dry specimen; refrigerated Isolator tube or frozen specimen; clotted specimen in Isolator tube or less than 1.5 mL in Isolator tube received more than one hour after collection; lavender top tube (EDTA).

Reference Range:
Gram Stain: No organisms seen.
Culture: No growth at 7 days.
