Specimen Collection Details
Collection: One 7.5 mL serum separator tube (SST). Also acceptable: One 4 mL green top tube (heparin) or 4.5 mL plasma separator tube (PST).
Handling: Protect specimen from light by wrapping tube in foil. Centrifuge SST or PST within 4 hours of collection, refrigerate, and transport in original tube. Centrifuge green top tube within 4 hours of collection and separate plasma from cells into a plastic vial for transport. Wrap separated plasma specimen in foil. Refrigerate.
Standard Volume: 2 mL serum or plasma.
Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL serum or plasma.
Transport: Refrigerated.
Comments: Exposure to light causes a decrease of bilirubin in the specimen. See also: Bilirubin, Total and Direct (30661). For Total Bilirubins on neonates under 15 days of age, order Neonatal Bilirubin (33510).
Rejection Criteria: Gross hemolysis.
