81690:BORRELIA SPECIES DNA DETECTION by PCR
Alias Names: B. Burgdorferi / Lyme Disease
Methodology: Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
Edit Date: 3/17/2008
Performed: Monda, Wednesday, Friday
Released: Within 5 days after setup at PeaceHealth Laboratories’ reference lab.
CPT Code: 87476-90
Specimen Collection Details
Collection: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in a sterile container. Also acceptable: 3-5 mm skin punch biopsy snap frozen in a sterile container; Synovial fluid; one 4 mL lavender top tube (EDTA), or one 4 mL red top tube.
Handling: Freeze CSF, synovial fluid, and skin punch specimen. Centrifuge and separate serum or plasma into a plastic vial. Freeze. If multiple tests are ordered, send separate specimen for this test.
Stability: 8 hours ambient (excludes tissue), 72 hours refrigerated (excludes tissue), or 1 year frozen.
Standard Volume: 1 mL CSF, synovial fluid, serum or plasma.
Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL CSF, synovial fluid, serum or plasma. Less than minimum volume may decrease sensitivity of assay.
Transport: Frozen on dry ice.
Rejection Criteria: Unsterile or leaking container; heparinized or severely lipemic specimen; frozen or clotted whole blood.

Negative: Borrelia species DNA not detected by PCR.
Positive: Borrelia species DNA detected by PCR.
A negative result does not rule out the presence of PCR reaction inhibitors in the patient specimen or Borrelia species DNA concentrations below the level of detection by the assay. This test is performed pursuant to an agreement with Roche Molecular Systems, Inc.
