96148:BILE ACIDS, FRACTIONATED AND TOTAL
Methodology: Liquid Chromatography / Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC/MS/MS)
Edit Date: 11/16/2010
Performed: Tuesday, Friday
Released: 1-6 days after setup at PeaceHealth Laboratories’ reference lab.
CPT Code: 83789-90
Specimen Collection Details
Collection: One 7.5 mL serum separator tubes (SST). Patient should fast a minimum of eight hours prior to collection.
Handling: Allow to clot, centrifuge and separate serum from cells into a plastic vial.
Stability: 8 hours ambient, 14 days refrigerated, or 6 months frozen.
Standard Volume: 1 mL serum.
Minimum Volume: 200 µL serum.
Transport: Refrigerated.
Comments: Bile Acids are formed in the liver, form cholesterol, are stored and concentrated in the gallbladder, and excreted into the intestines in response to food. Elevated concentrations often suggest impaired hepatic clearance due to liver disease. Patients with intestinal malabsorption and metabolic disorders such as Gilbert’s disease do not exhibit elevated Bile Acids concentrations.

Reference Range:
7 years and older:
Cholic acid (CA) 0-1.9 µmol/L
Chenodeoxycholic acid (CDC) 0-3.4 µmol/L
Deoxycholic acid (DCA) 0-2.5 µmol/L
Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDC) 0-1.0 µmol/L
Total 0-7.0 µmol/L
