Specimen Collection Details
Collection: Note: All outpatient blood gases, capillary and arterial, must be drawn at the Respiratory Therapy Department outpatient room at Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend, located on the second floor of the Hospital. Outpatient draws are done between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 pm. No appointment is necessary.
Draw 5 mL whole blood by arterial or venous puncture in a calcium titrated, plastic, heparin coated syringe. After drawing, carefully remove any air bubbles. Transport specimen to the laboratory ambient within 30 minutes. Do not cool specimen. Capillary specimens may be used if they are collected in calcium titrated, heparin coated plastic tubes, and stoppered.
Handling: Keep specimen in original container, allowing no exposure to air. Transport ambient.
Stability: 30 minutes ambient.
Standard Volume: 5 mL whole blood
Minimum Volume: 1 mL whole blood in syringe or 200 µL capillary blood
Transport: Ambient.
Rejection Criteria: Specimen delayed more than 30 minutes prior to testing.
