Specimen Collection Details
Collection: Specimen must be obtained prior to digital cervical exam or vaginal probe ultra sound exam, using fFN Specimen Transport Kit, available from Client Services (541.341.8010 or 800.826.3616). During sterile speculum exam, rotate swab across the cervical os or posterior fornix.
Stability: 8 hours ambient, 72 hours refrigerated, or 3 months frozen. Avoid temperatures above 25° C. Freeze if specimen is not received in laboratory within 72 hours of collection.
Transport: Refrigerated; or if frozen, on dry ice.
Comments: Manipulation of the cervix may cause the release of Fetal Fibronectin (fFN). Specimen should be collected no sooner than 24 hours after coitus. Patients with suspected or known placental abruption, placenta previa, or moderate or gross vaginal bleeding should not be tested.
Rejection Criteria: Specimen collected in anything other than the specified specimen collection kit; refrigerated specimen received in laboratory more than 72 hours after collection.
