Specimen Collection Details |
Collection: |
One 7.5 mL serum separator tube (SST). Also acceptable: Green top tube (heparin) or lavender top tube (EDTA). Patients should abstain from ascorbic acid supplements for a minimum of 24 hours prior to specimen collection. |
Handling: |
Allow to clot completely, centrifuge and separate serum from cells and pour into a plastic vial. |
Stability: |
Specimen stable 72 hours ambient, 14 days refrigerated, or 2 months frozen. |
Standard Volume: |
0.5 mL serum or plasma. |
Minimum Volume: |
0.3 mL serum or plasma. |
Transport: |
Refrigerated. |
Comments: |
High levels of ascorbic acid interfere with the fructosamine assay. Variations in levels of serum proteins (albumin and immunoglobulin) may affect fructosamine results. |
Rejection Criteria: |
Hemolysis; contaminated specimen.
