Specimen Collection Details
Collection: Aspirate, tissue, biopsy sample, fluid, intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD), or any other specimen that can be collected without contamination with normal flora. Use anaerobic transport vial, sterile syringe with air expelled, or other sterile container for fluids. Accepted but not recommended: One 4 mL green top tube (heparin). Use anaerobic transport system for swabs. Do not refrigerate.
Handling: If a syringe is submitted, the needle must be removed and the syringe capped.
Stability: Specimen in anaerobic transport media or syringe with air expelled stable 24 hours ambient. Specimen not in anaerobic transport media stable 2 hours ambient, or less, depending on specimen volume. Unstable frozen.
Transport: Ambient.
Comments: An additional charge will be added for the definitive identification of any isolated organism(s) that resemble Actinomyces.
Rejection Criteria: Delayed transport; unsterile or leaking container; use of lavender tube (EDTA); syringe submitted with needle attached; swab not in transport media; frozen specimen. Unless specimen is considered difficult to recollect, leaking container will be rejected if source is respiratory, or if there is an indication of mycobacterial infection such as clinical history or orders for Acid-Fast Bacillus (AFB) Culture and/or Smear.
