Specimen Collection Details |
Collection: |
One 7.5 mL serum separator tube (SST). Also acceptable: One 4 mL green top tube or one 4.5 mL light green plasma separator tube (PST). If a fasting glucose is needed, patient should be fasting 8-12 hours. A non-fasting specimen is acceptable. Do not draw from a limb receiving an intravenous infusion. Patient should avoid exercising forearm before collection, which may cause an elevation in potassium level. |
Handling: |
Allow to clot, centrifuge SST or PST within 2 hours of collection and transport in original tube. If a non-gel barrier tube is used, centrifuge within 1 hour and separate into a plastic vial for transport. Refrigerate. |
