Specimen Collection Details
Collection: One 4 mL green top tube (heparin). Also acceptable: One 5 mL red top tube. Draw following a 12-14 hour overnight fast. Patient must not consume alcohol or ingest vitamin supplements for 24 hours prior to collection. Protect from light during collection and transport.
Handling: Allow to clot, centrifuge and separate serum or plasma from cells and pour into a plastic tube. Label tube appropriately as ‘serum’ or plasma.’ Protect from light. Freeze immediately. Critical frozen. Indicate serum or plasma on requisition.
Stability: Frozen. Unstable ambient or refrigerated.
Standard Volume: 1 mL serum or plasma.
Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL serum or plasma.
Transport: Frozen on dry ice. Protect from light.
Rejection Criteria: Specimen other than frozen serum or heparinized plasma; use of gel tubes.
