94110:BK VIRUS, QUANTITATIVE by PCR
Alias Names: BKV
Methodology: Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
Edit Date: 6/3/2009
Performed: Daily
Released: 1-5 days after setup at PeaceHealth Laboratories’ reference lab.
CPT Code: 87799-90
Specimen Collection Details
Collection: One 7.5 serum separator tube (SST). Also acceptable: One 4 mL lavender top tube (EDTA), or random urine.
Handling: Centrifuge and separate serum or plasma from cells and pour into a plastic vial. Freeze serum, plasma, or urine. Refrigerate whole blood. Do not freeze whole blood. Specimen source is required. Indicate source on vial.
Stability: 8 hours ambient, 72 hours refrigerated, or 30 days frozen (do not freeze whole blood).
Standard Volume: 1 mL whole blood, serum, plasma, or urine.
Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL whole blood, serum, plasma, or urine.
Transport: Whole blood refrigerated; serum, plasma, or urine frozen on dry ice.
Rejection Criteria: Heparinized or clotted specimen; frozen whole blood.

Reference Range:
The reportable range for this assay is 2.6-8.6 log copies/mL or 390-390,000,000 copies/mL.

A negative result (less than 390 copies/mL or less than 2.6 log copies/mL) does not rule out the presence of PCR inhibitors in the patient specimen or BK virus DNA concentrations below the level of detection by the assay. Inhibition may also lead to underestimation of viral quantitation.
