Specimen Collection Details
Collection: URINE: First morning urine is voided. Patient should collect specimen in clean container. BLADDER WASHINGS: Vigorously lavage the bladder with 50 mL of saline using a syringe and catheter into a clean container. OTHER BODY FLUIDS: Submit all fluid collected in a clean container.
Handling: URINE: Cytolyt Collection Fluid fixative can be added to specimen in a 1:1 ratio if specimen cannot be transported within two hours of collection. If no fixative is available, refrigerate specimen until transported. BLADDER WASHINGS: Cytolyt Collection Fluid fixative can be added in a 1:1 ratio if specimen cannot be transported within one hour of collection. Best results are with fresh washings sent immediately. OTHER BODY FLUIDS: Send specimen fresh. To prevent clotting, use 1 mL heparin for every 1000 mL fluid. Add 0.5 mL heparin for lesser amounts of fluid. Refrigerate specimen. Do not add fixative to these specimens.
Standard Volume: All fluid collected.
Minimum Volume: 1 mL fluid.
Transport: Any fluid containing fixative ambient. Any fluid without fixative refrigerated.
Comments: Refer to the Surgical Pathology section of the User Guide for special specimen collection instructions.
Rejection Criteria: Pooled 24-hour and concentrated first morning urine; clotted specimen; specimen ambient longer than 2 hours.
