Methodology: Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) / Mass Spectrometry (MS)
Edit Date: 10/15/2009
Performed: Monday-Friday
Released: 24 hours after setup at PeaceHealth Laboratories’ reference lab.
CPT Code: 83655-90
Specimen Collection Details
Collection: Hair or nail clippings in a clean, dry container. Hair specimen should be about 3″ long and the width of a pencil and cut near the scalp. Nail specimen should include clippings from all ten fingernails or toenails.
Standard Volume: 1 gram hair or nail clippings.
Transport: Ambient.
Comments: Useful for detecting lead toxicity. Hair or nail analysis of lead can be used to corroborate blood analysis. If the hair is collected in a time sequence fashion (based on length from root), the approximate time of exposure can be assessed.

Reference Range:
<25.0 mcg/g of hair or nails
Normally, the hair lead content is <5.0 mcg/g. Hair lead >25.0 mcg/g

indicates severe lead exposure.

Gadolinium is known to interfere with most metals tests. If gadolinium-containing contrast media has been administered a specimen can not be collected for 48 hours.
