Collection: |
Three successive morning specimens, or for pooled sputum, collect sputum throughout the day in a clean container. |
Handling: |
Containers can be held ambient after collection has begun if using Cytolyt Collection Fluid fixative, otherwise refrigerate fresh specimen. Send separate specimen without fixative if other testing ordered. |
Stability: |
Cytolyt Collection Fluid fixative stable 10 days ambient. Fresh specimen ambient 2 hours; refrigerate for longer storage. |
Standard Volume: |
5-10 mL sputum. |
Minimum Volume: |
1 mL sputum. |
Transport: |
Specimen in Cytolyt Collection Fluid fixative ambient. Fresh specimen refrigerated. |
Comments: |
Specimen in Cytolyt Collection Fluid fixative cannot be split with Microbiology. Refer to the Surgical Pathology section of the User Guide for special specimen collection instructions. |
Rejection Criteria: |
Fresh specimen held ambient more than 2 hours; specimen in Cytolyt Collection Fluid fixative held more than 10 days. |
