Specimen Collection Details |
Collection: |
One 4.5 light blue top tube (sodium citrate). |
Handling: |
Immediately centrifuge and plasma. Centrifuge again and separate into TWO plastic vials, each containing 0.5 mL plasma. Do not use glass vials. NOTE: A double-centrifuged specimen is critical for accurate results as platelet contamination may cause spurious results. Label each tube as ‘double-spun plasma.’ Freeze immediately ≤ -40° C. Indicate if patient is on Coumadin, which will lower Protein S. Each coagulation assay requested should have its own vial. |
Standard Volume: |
1 mL plasma divided into two tubes containing 0.5 mL each. |
Minimum Volume: |
0.5 mL plasma divided into two tubes (may result in QNS for reflex testing) |
Transport: |
Frozen on dry ice. |
Comments: |
Useful for investigation of patients with a history of thrombosis. |
Rejection Criteria: |
Thawing or thawed specimen; hemolysis or lipemia. |
