Specimen Collection Details
Collection: One 4.5 mL light blue top tube (sodium citrate) filled to proper level – do not overfill. Blood-to-anticoagulant ratio should be 9:1; inadequate filling will decrease this ratio and may lead to inaccurate results.
Handling: Immediately after collection centrifuge at 2500 x g for 15 minutes. Remove plasma into a plastic vial and centrifuge again to assure complete platelet removal. Aliquot into a plastic vial. Freeze immediately. KEEP FROZEN.
Stability: 1 hour ambient or 30 days frozen. Unstable refrigerated.
Standard Volume: 1 mL plasma
Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL plasma
Transport: Frozen on dry ice.
Comments: An increased plasma level of PAI-1 is an important cause of impaired fibrinolytic function and may be associated with thrombotic disease. In addition, increased levels are found in conditions such as normal pregnancy, sepsis coronary artery disease as well as in recurrent MI. Pre-surgery elevated levels of PAI-1 may be an indication of thrombotic complications post-operatively. PAI-1 is an acute phase reactant.
Rejection Criteria: Hemolysis; microclots.
