Specimen Collection Details
Collection: For NASAL EOS exam collect 2-3 air dried slides smeared with nasal secretion by having patient blow nose in plastic wrap. Make smears and allow to air dry. Do not send nasopharyngeal swabs as cellular recovery from swabs is usually poor. For STOOL EOS exam collect stool in clean dry plastic container. Alternatively, 4 air-dried smears prepared from the most liquid part of the specimen may be submitted in cardboard or plastic folders.
Handling: Send slides in slide folders or wrap in heavy cardboard and tape closed. Submit ambient stool specimen within 2 hours or within 24 hours refrigerated.
Stability: Stool specimen stable 2 hours ambient or 24 hours refrigerated.
Transport: Slides ambient; stool ambient or refrigerated.
Rejection Criteria: Insufficient sample; broken slides.
