Comments: |
Sodium metabisulfite-induced sickling of red cells containing hemoglobin S. The presence or absence of sickling is observed microscopically. This test becomes positive at Hgb S levels equal to or greater than 25%. Thus it is possible for a negative result to occur in some combined defects such as Hbg S accompanied by α or β thalassemia. For alternative or additional tests, see Hemoglobin S Quantitation (48830), or Hemoglobinopathy Evaluation (10570) . |
