Specimen Collection Details
Collection: 24-hour urine collection in acid-washed container, with 10 mL 6N hydrochloric acid (HCl) added at start of collection. Specimen must be refrigerated during collection, storage, and transport. Also acceptable: Random urine acidified with 6N HCl. Preservative can be added at end of collection only if specimen has been refrigerated entire time.
Handling: Adjust pH to 1.5-2.0 with 6N HCl, mix well and aliquot into a clean, dry plastic container. Total volume and collection time interval are required for test interpretation.
Stability: 4 hours ambient, 7 days refrigerated, or 30 days frozen.
Standard Volume: 4 mL aliquot
Minimum Volume: 4 mL aliquot
Transport: Refrigerated.
Comments: High concentrations of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) can interfere. It is recommended that patients refrain from taking vitamin C supplements for at least 48 hours prior to urine collection.
Rejection Criteria: Specimen with no preservative, or with a pH >3.
