Specimen Collection Details
Collection: 3 mL amniotic fluid.
Handling: Submit unspun specimen. Refrigerate. Include additional clinical information on requisition, i.e., weeks gestation, is patient diabetic, source if not amniotic fluid, e.g., vaginal pool. NOTE: Visible meconium or blood greater than 2% Hct may interfere with this assay.
Stability: 24-36 hours refrigerated, or 14 days frozen.
Standard Volume: 3 mL amniotic fluid.
Minimum Volume: 1 mL amniotic fluid.
Transport: Refrigerated if received in laboratory within 36 hours of collection, or frozen on dry ice if transport is delayed.
Comments: Clinic significance: Rapid test to determine fetal lung maturity.
Rejection Criteria: Refrigerated specimen received in laboratory more than 36 hours after collection.

Reference Range:
≥ 55 mg/gm
relative low risk of RDS (in non-diabetics)
≤ 54 mg/gm
high risk of RDS cannot be excluded
