|Comments:|| For diagnostic testing: Ideally 2-3 specimens should be collected on consecutive days. However, specimens collected after the third day of hospital stay are of limited value. Testing for Clostridium difficile should be considered as an alternative to culture in all patients over the age of 6 months with clinically significant diarrhea and a history of antibiotic exposure. A biochemical screen may be done when presumptive pathogens are isolated. If indicated, identification will follow. Additional charges will be added for this test.
This test detects the presence of Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter, and E. coli 0157:H7. Additional media for the isolation of Vibrio will be included if specific instructions are given to look for this organism.
|Rejection Criteria:||Delayed transport; rectal swab with no visible fecal material; specimen mixed with water or urine; swab not in transport media; frozen specimen; more than one specimen collected within a 24-hour period.|
|No Salmonella or Shigella isolated. No E.coli O157:H7 isolated. No Campylobacter isolated.|
