Methodology: Liquid Chromatography/Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC/MS/MS
Edit Date: 10/30/2010
Performed: Wednesday
Released: 3-7 days after setup at PeaceHealth Laboratories’ reference lab
CPT Code: 82131-90
Specimen Collection Details
Collection: 24-hour urine in a clean, dry plastic container. Also acceptable: Random specimens, but these are reported as cystine/creatinine ratios. Refrigerate during collection and storage. Do not add acid or other preservatives.

NOTE: This test is used for monitoring treatment of patients previously diagnosed with cystinuria.

Handling: Immediately after collection, aliquot 10 mL from a well mixed 24-hour or random collection and send to lab refrigerated. Specimen must be assayed within 24 hours. Freeze if specimen will not reach lab within 24 hours. Record total volume and collection time interval on transport tube and requisition. NOTE: Clinical information is required for appropriate interpretation and includes age, gender, diet (e.g., TPN therapy), drug therapy, and family history.
Stability: 24 hours refrigerated or 30 days frozen. Specimen unstable ambient.
Standard Volume: 10 mL urine.
Minimum Volume: 3 mL urine.
Transport: Frozen aliquot on dry ice if specimen will not reach lab within 24 hours.
Rejection Criteria: Ambient specimen or specimen held refrigerated more than 24 hours; pH <5.0 or pH >8.0; specimen with acid or other preservatives. Large amounts of hemoglobin or blood can interfere with quantitation.

Reference Range:
By report.
