Collection: |
One 7.5 mL serum separator tube (SST). Also acceptable: One 4 mL green top tube (heparin), or one 4 mL lavender top tube (EDTA). Draw following overnight (12 hour) fast. Patient must not consume alcohol for 24 hours prior to draw. Protect from light during collection, storage, and transport. |
Handling: |
Allow to clot, centrifuge and separate serum or plasma from cells and pour into a plastic transport tube immediately. Refrigerate. Protect from light. |
Stability: |
Specimen stable 1 month refrigerated or 1 year frozen. Specimen unstable ambient. |

Comments: |
Vitamin E often correlates with serum lipids. Significant deficiency of vitamin E (<3.0 mg/L) is associated with improper specimen collection and malabsorption syndromes. Significant excess (>40 mg/L) is often associated with hyperlipidemia. |
