Specimen Collection Details
Collection:
Body fluid in a BacT/Alert FA (aerobic) bottle and a FN (anaerobic) bottle using aseptic technique. Bottles must be at ambient temperature.
Handling:
Do not refrigerate or freeze. Inspect broth and sensor. Do not use if broth is cloudy or sensor is yellow.
Stability:
24 hours ambient. Unstable refrigerated or frozen.
Standard Volume:
BacT/Alert FA and FN bottles: 10 mL fluid each.
Minimum Volume:
BacT/Alert FA and FN bottle: 1 mL fluid each.
Transport:
Ambient.
Comments:
Includes aerobic and anaerobic cultures. Potential pathogens will be identified. Susceptibility testing will be done if appropriate. Additional charges will be added for these tests. See also: Fluid in a Bottle Culture and Smear (60682).
